Beauty School Accreditations
We strongly recommend that you look for nationally accredited beauty schools and cosmetology schools. Nationally accredited schools are governed by a strict set of national guidelines to ensure that their curriculums and instructors meet national standards of high educational performance.
As part of the initial review process, a specially appointed visitation team evaluates a school seeking accreditation. The school is monitored on all aspects of school activities including classroom theory, clinic teaching technique, grading procedures, financial aid procedures and the financial health of the school. Both students and staff are interviewed to ensure that the beauty school is performing within standards. Accredited beauty schools are reviewed on a regular basis (at least once every five years) to ensure they are maintaining the accrediting agency’s standards.
This process makes sure that students are properly trained and financially protected. Non-accredited schools do not have any regulatory agency enforcing high standards, which can result in students being placed at unnecessary risk.
The National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences
(NAACAS) is officially recognized by the United States Department of Education as a national agency for the institutional accreditation of post-secondary schools and departments of cosmetology arts and sciences.
If you decide to attend a non-accredited beauty school, you should, at minimum, choose a school that is licensed to operate legally by the state in which it operates.

Visiting Beauty Schools and Cosmetology Schools
It is very important for you to visit the beauty and cosmetology schools you are seriously considering. When you call to schedule an interview with the admissions representative, also arrange to meet with at least one instructor and one or more currently enrolled students. You should plan to attend a classroom lecture and a clinic demonstration.
During your visit, don’t forget to get a catalog and view the facilities and laboratory (“clinic”) equipment. If you meet with a student ask them:
1) Are the instructors knowledgeable; do they have on-the-job experience?
2) Do you like the program you’re taking?
3) Are you learning what you need to get a job?
4) Have you had any problems with the school, instructors or classes?
5) What do you like most about the school? What do you like least?

Local Beauty School Research
If you’re a regular customer at a salon, begin observing the staff and the various duties they perform. Let the owner know you’re interested in attending beauty school and ask the owner if he/she would give you some career advice. Also, ask if you could you talk to several of the staff about what they like and don’t like about their jobs, what beauty school they attended and would they recommend it, and are there other beauty schools they would recommend.
If you don’t patronize the same salon on a regular basis, the owner and staff of local beauty shops may be very willing to answer your questions and help you with your career. Remember, successful beauty services professionals have strong people skills. The chances are very good that they will try to help you…after all; the wise owner or manager knows that you’re a prospective customer and, perhaps, a prospective employee.
